VFL Rd 9 Southport vs Frankston
Body:

Brilliant first quarter by the Dolphins - they totally outplayed Southport, but after that the wheels came off. Almost a blueprint of how the Geelong game went a few weeks ago. Seems we are ultra competitive at home on a Friday night, but struggling to keep the pressure up away.

Gee it was a terrible broadcast - Im not knocking the commentators - but the camera work was shocking. In and out of focus every couple of minutes, the camera wasnt where the ball was and there was a lot of movement of the camera. I finished up feeling like I was sea sick after about 10 minutes!

While its great to have the live streams, the AFL need to make them more professional. This was like it was taken on someones phone, but as with all things AFL, amateurism will be at the front of most things they do. Maybe a name change to AAFL. Australian Amateurish Football League?

No doubt Dolphs will bounce back next week against Sandy on Saturday night at Kars Street and should notch another win.

Definitely improved from 2021 when their was no commentating, its great we have two but would be great if we had some replays also perhaps a few more stats.

Their was a game earlier this year that i saw which had that kind of coverage, quiet possibly it was the southport game. Must be a gold coast thing - the sun, the beautiful weather and women gets everyone on the beers 😁

I do match videos for the women's teams on my phone and I swear the camera work was worse than mine sometimes.

Really ordinary performance by Frankston, reminded me of last year against Werribee: good start, then crumbled when the opposition came at us. We also have a habit of switching off whenever we build a handy lead. It has featured in nearly every win we've had so far (Port Melbourne, Coburg, GWS, and Sydney) and this week it cost us dearly. This team needs to learn how to be ruthless.

the female commentator obviously hadn't studied the numbers of the Frankston players as she rarely called them by name and only where there was a stoppage for a mark or free kick when she had a chance to gaze at the team lists -  her male counterpart wasn't much better but they seemed to know all the Southport players

Frankston won’t be a finals contender until they improve their goal kicking accuracy - 73.110 says that (39.9%)

Bad goalkicking will hamper us against some of the better teams, but I don't think it's the core issue. Quite simply, we need to capitalise on good starts and put teams to the sword instead of letting them overrun us once we get a handy lead. A good start against Southport went to waste as we capitulated for three quarter. That's what will happen when we play the better sides in the comp if we don't learn to maintain a 4-quarter effort. The fact that we've been blown off the park in our last two losses is alarming. I accept there will be losses, but to not even make a contest out of it makes us look second-rate.

So far they've responded well to every loss, however. And we're back on home soil this week against Sandringham. Beat them, and we'll be back on track.

Goalkicking is a problem for sure.....mainly that it's a momentum killer. Too often we're dominating periods of play and instead of scoring multiple goals we kick three behinds and then the opposition get one against the flow.....too often this season that has led to players dropping their heads a bit. Again against Southport there just wasn't enough reward for effort, particularly in the first quarter. I think we led by 8 points and for the dominance we had it should have been a four or five goal lead. From that point they took over the possession game and we were coached out of the game if you ask me.....Southport were patient, chipping it around once they had a lead, and they hit their targets. Our blokes were playing the long ball and turning it over too often. I think we have to be realistic about our general foot skills and admit they're poor and need major work. We don't play the possession game well because we simply don't hit targets enough. It's a shame, because as a team our attack on the ball and player alike is top notch. The boys work hard, but unless we start hitting targets both around the ground and in front of goal, this team is going to struggle to make finals.

Totally agree AJ. This game style will be ok in the long run - I much prefer the long kick style even though at the moment at times its not being executed that well, it will be much more sustainable - than the high possession hand balling round and round in circles than the last few years. Apart from a few exceptions the kicking skills generally are not good enough for a finals side. We are really missing Fordham, Stoddardt and Owens in that department.

Couple of key players appear horribly out of form. Lloyd and Gown need to get their finger out - quickly if we are going to beat Sandy this week.
