The AFL has today confirmed the Tasmania Football Club will field teams in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Victorian Football League Women’s (VFLW) in 2026.

Tasmania will join the competitions on a full-time basis from next season as the club continues preparations for entry into the AFL and AFLW after being awarded the 19th licence in 2023.

Tasmania previously competed in the VFL for eight seasons between 2001 to 2008.

TASMANIAN Devils are now extinct after AFL Tasmania ditched its Victorian Football League team in favour of a 10-team state competition.

As revealed in the Sunday Age last month, AFL Tasmania has been working on its state league development for the past three years and will launch the competition on September 23.

AFL Tasmania has invited 10 clubs from across the state — Burnie, Devonport, South Launceston, Launceston, North Launceston, Lauderdale, Clarence, Hobart, North Hobart and Glenorchy — to participate and hopes to have the league up and running next season, with or without a VFL team.

THE Tassie Devils will cease to exist next season if AFL Tasmania's proposed Statewide league becomes a reality in 2009.

That was the message AFL Tasmania general manager Scott Wade conveyed to the Devils' players at training last night ending recent uncertainty and speculation over the club's future.

"I advised them that if AFL Tasmania establishes a Statewide league we won't be fielding a team in the VFL," Wade said yesterday.

"At this particular point in time we don't have a State league because we still have clubs that are required to commit.

"But I also advised the players that it is highly likely that we will have a State league - and we won't be doing both," he said.

Reports that a financial lifeline could be extended to keep the Devils alive in 2009 drew an ultimatum to AFL Tasmania from three Northern clubs yesterday.

TASMANIA was left two agonising points short of snapping a long losing streak yesterday, falling to Collingwood in a VFL heart-breaker at MC Labour Park in Melbourne.

The Devils recovered from a slow start to dominate most of the second half, but failed to convert where it matters most -- on the scoreboard.

In the final term the visitors kicked 3.6, including missing several golden opportunities late in the game, before going down 14.14 (98) to 14.12 (96).

The loss consigned the Devils to their eighth consecutive defeat with just two rounds remaining in a horror season.

But the players finally found the passion and grunt coach Lance Spaulding has been seeking from them for the past month.
