VICTORIAN school boy football and cricket star Alex Keath has turned down an offer to join the Gold Coast Football Club after accepting a deal with the Victorian Bushrangers Cricket Team.

The sporting prodigy announced yesterday he would not be joining the AFL's 17th team as he plans on pursuing his dream of playing cricket for Australia.

Keath was one of 12 17-year-old footballers listed by the Gold Coast as part of the club's recruitment plan.

WESTERN Australia can claim national bragging rights when the WAFL takes on the VFL in next month's State clash at Medibank Stadium in Perth.

After victories over Queensland and South Australia in the past two years, the WAFL is aiming for a win against Victoria for the first time in two decades following a big loss in 2007.

The Casey Scorpions will have to make do without key big man Tim Mohr for at least a month after he dislocated his left shoulder against Collingwood last week. Recruit Cam Purdy is also on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

But Casey’s problems are nothing compared to Port Melbourne’s. The first month of the VFL has yet to expire, but Port already has an injury list long enough to fill a hospital emergency ward. In last week’s second round the Boroughs were so light for numbers that the reserves needed three top-ups from the Oakleigh Chargers. There are some long-term injuries among this medical report supplied by coach Gary Ayres: Sam Dwyer (knee), Heath O’Farrell (glandular fever), Luke Marriott (broken wrist), Sam McGarry (ITB release), Jono Mullins (hamstring), Josh Scipione (hamstring), Luke Kyriakidis (quad), Josh Purcell (hamstring), Phil Raymond (calf), Matt Pianto (heel), Patrick McMahon (knee) and Tyrone Beam (knee). In addition, captain John Baird (heel) and Richard Jones (shoulder) are some time away from resuming training.

Dwyer is a big “out” for Port and indeed for the VFL as it assembles a team for the representative match against WA. He suffered ligament damage in the first quarter of the Round 1 clash against Gold Coast. “Someone fell across his knee. He actually played on and was our best player, but he pulled up sore,” Ayres said. “He had an operation last Monday and we won’t have him for two months."
