But Magpie fans should be equally excited by Clayton's decision to play in the black and white after being delisted by the Kangaroos at the end of last season.
Nearly every SANFL club was chasing his services. He was third in the Liston Trophy after playing only 12 VFL games last year proving he is a class act.
So is he worth a punt for the 2005 Magarey Medal?
"It's a long year and it's only round one so we'll just have to wait and see," Clayton, 175cm and 76kg, said.
However, if he earns the SANFL's greatest individual honour this year, his flickering dream to return to the elite could become reality.
"I have still got the desire but I just want to concentrate on playing footy over here and help out Port Adelaide," Clayton, originally from Warracknabeal in country Victoria, said.
"Josh Mahoney from the Power is a good example. He's won an AFL premiership at 26 so anything can happen I suppose.
"That (returning to AFL) will look after itself if I go alright."
