It was a good win by Hawthorn today over Geelong who were the best team in the H&A season.

Calling the team that won today Box Hill is a joke.  There were 18 Hawthorn listed players in the Hawthorn jumper singing the Hawthorn club song after the game.  Box Hill is dead in all but name.

Agree Comeng, I think it's pretty hard to argue against that with Box Hill.

I'm not sure if you can recall a few years back,  but Box Hill had a chance to win a premiership and (I think it was) Cyrill Rioli sat the entire last quarter on the bench to get him ready for a Hawthorn Grand Final appearance the following week. Box Hill list that one. It's compromised on many levels!

Tipped Geelong but looking at the amount of AFL playing experience of Box Hill's defenders vs Geelong's forwards should have led me to tip the other way. Easy to say in hindsight but I think it was decisive. Scrimshaw and Mraz best on for mine though Greeves was good as well. Nairn and as always Hustwaite were also strong performers. There was some genuinely good defending by both sides, so even though it wasn't much of a game overall, it probably would have been more interesting to watch if it weren't so frustrating to see a VFL grand final contested by two sides that are essentially both AFL reserves and that fielded 14 and 18 AFL-listed players.

In reference to the Women's footy those that think the standard & quality has improved take a look at the first quarter of Essendon v Suns.    Pathetic !

The average standard has improved [edit: referring to women's footy], and the best teams now are better than the best teams of 5 years ago, although some teams have gone backwards. [Edit: deleted sentences that weren't really suited to a VFL forum. Apologies for the initial post.] Not saying anyone needs to watch it, and it will never be as good a product as the men's game, but if the whole league is outright bad that's still compatible with the standard having improved - just means it was even worse before.

Speaking of game quality, and back to the VFL grand final, I'm inclined to doubt whether a better game would have convinced more people to watch more of the VFL, since most attendees were probably Hawthorn and Geelong supporters who wouldn't be likely to do more than watch their own club's reserves sides regardless of game quality (unless they already supported a standalone as well). This one having a larger audience than other recent grand finals may be because the 4 previous VFL grand finals all featured an interstate club.

Yes excellent crowds at both games over there.   The SANFL game with a mostly full house would have had an amazing atmosphere.

Good TV numbers for the SANFL grand final as well, with over 250k TV viewers reported. That one was a great game to watch.
