CASEY Scorpions have been jolted by the resignation of senior coach Brett Lovett, who was halfway through his two year contract.

Lovett, judged the VFL coach of 2012 after steering the Casey Scorpions to the minor premiership, told the club yesterday that he would not be going on.

The former Melbourne star said this morning that the demands of the part-time role were too great.

He said he’d stood down for family and work reasons, “in that order”.

“It’s just getting to that stage of life where I need to dedicate a bit more time to other, more important things in my life,” Lovett told Local Footy.

“During the finals my son (Jake) was going through some trial games with the Dandenong Stingrays at Under 16 level and I missed seeing them.

“It always drives a knife through my gut when I’m not there for him.

“I compare it my situation. My dad (Jim) has been supporting me for 40 years. He still comes to my games.

“My eldest daughter has bought a house and moved out. Time goes pretty quickly. You have to spend some time with the kids while you can.”

He said an expansion of his nursery business was another priority.

Lovett said he “absolutely loved’’ his season at Casey and working with his former club Melbourne.

But he said it was too difficult to coach in a part-time capacity.

“I just can’t commit 110 percent and that’s what you have to do at VFL level. She’s a pretty tough gig.

“You need that energy and enthusiasm and I’ve probably lost a bit of it. I’m either all in or all out. When I’m in something I try to give it everything. In this case I can’t.’’

Casey Scorpions general manager Brian Woodman said the club was shocked by Lovett’s decision but understood his position and wished him well.
