SANDRINGHAM president Gerry Ryan has accused St Kilda of showing the Zebras a lack of respect during the clubs' five-year VFL alignment.

A forthright Ryan said Sandy had always respected the Saints but sometimes it hadn't been reciprocated.

His comments came ahead of a meeting between the clubs next Wednesday that will clarify if the alignment continues.I

t expires at the end of October and Sandy have asked for it to go on for at least three years.

WERRIBEE was well in control of the 1993 VFA grand final against Port Melbourne in the early stages of the last quarter, but Frank Lesiputty was in no mood for premature celebrations.

The resolute centre half-back knew the pain of losing a grand final, having been part of the Werribee outfit that lost to Dandenong by nine points in 1991.

So when 19-year-old teammate Peter Williams began to let his excitement get the better of him, Lesiputty was having none of it.

“I barrelled him,” says Lesiputty with a laugh. “Because I had lost in ’91, I was so determined to win and Peter started laughing and enjoying it. So I told him, ‘Pull your head in and get on your man’.”

Williams, now a teacher, confirms the story.

They have even brought back the classic jumper as part of the festivities!

Looks good. One of my first years following Port Melbourne. It was a fiery day, with Jack Aziz causing some excitement in the goal-square.

I seem to remember confusion as to the siren sounding, with supporters running onto the ground early.

THE future of the Bendigo Gold Football Club looks brighter just one day into its survival campaign.

The Gold announced on Monday that the club needed 500 new members, a marked lift in sponsorship and access to a facility capable of running as a commercial venture to ensure its survival.

In developments yesterday:

n the City Of Greater Bendigo confirmed its support for Gold, with the Epsom-Huntly Recreation Reserve social rooms a possible facility for the club;

- a Bendigo Advertiser poll attracted 448 votes, 63.7 per cent in favour of Gold;

- Gold coach Aussie Jones reaffirmed his commitment to the club; and

- Gold skipper Steven Stroobants detailed how important the Gold pathway was for young footballers.

Bendigo Gold chairman Tim Dickson was elated with the response yesterday, but warned the club’s battle was a marathon, not a sprint.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has apologised to two Port Melbourne players he reportedly abused during a VFL game on the weekend.
Clarkson called Toby Pinwill and John Baird on Monday, after Hawthorn received a letter from the VFL asking him to explain his behaviour at the quarter-time huddle of Port Melbourne's game against Hawthorn affiliate Box Hill.
Pinwell had been reported following a clash with Box Hill player Sam Iles.

THE VFL has declared the waterlogged North Port Oval unsafe and shifted tomorrow's Round 15 VFL clash between Port Melbourne and Box Hill Hawks to the City Oval.

League officials inspected the ground this morning after Box Hill officials raised concerns about playing on it.

They quickly decided to take the match to Box Hill.

Stretches of water settled on North Port Oval last Saturday, with one long-time Borough supporter saying he had never seen it so heavy.

It's the third home game Port Melbourne has forfeited this season. Matches against Werribee and Sandringham were transferred earlier in the season due to work on the Norm Goss grandstand.
