The trip to North Port Oval to take on the Borough must rank as one of the toughest in Australian football.

Port Melbourne has made the ground its fortress under Gary Ayres, winning 27 of its last 30 matches at the venue prior to the 2014 season.

While all involved expected a fierce contest, no one anticipated Collingwood would suffer its first loss of the VFL season to the tune of 53 points when the two clubs met on Saturday afternoon.

The Pies were shell-shocked by Port’s nine-goal onslaught in the opening term and battled for stability there on.

The result came as a surprise to most given the Magpies’ confident start to the new season, winning all four practice matches and holding out North Ballarat in the first round a fortnight ago.

Carlton's out-of-form forwards Jarrad Waite and Jeff Garlett were less than convincing in the VFL on Saturday, with just two goals between them in the Blues' last-gasp three-point win over Frankston at Visy Park.

With hopes of a return against the Western Bulldogs next Sunday, Waite finished with 2.3 from 12 disposals and five marks, while Garlett, who spent most of the match in the midfield, collected just 13 possessions, three marks and failed to register a score.

Although Blues VFL coach Luke Webster said he was largely impressed by the pair, they produced only glimpses of their best.

Waite's two majors - one in the second quarter from the boundary line and one in the final term from a snap in a pack - were freakish opportunist goals.

Provided the redevelopment of the Junction Oval goes ahead, and the Saints eventually march into their new digs, there will be one group of supporters particularly happy.

Craig Reardon has worked feverishly to gather a group of St Kilda members and supporters agitating for change under the slogan, ‘‘Bring `em home’’.

He believes the club would benefit enormously from at least, initially, having its stand-alone VFL team, set to take the field in 2016, based at St Kilda's original home ground.

‘‘To me, the notion of the debt-ridden club investing in Moorabbin is madness when the city whose name it bears houses what will be an excellent boutique stadium more than capable of staging VFL games,’’ Reardon said.

FRANKSTON had more forward entries and 10 more scoring shots, 32 to 22.

But Sandringham won the count that mattered, on the scoreboard at the final siren, in the Round 1 VFL match at Kars St on Saturday.

In an encouraging season-opening effort from the Zebras, they triumphed 17.5 (107) to 11.21 (87) in a game in which momentum swung back and forth like a pendulum.

Sandy were sluggish in the first quarter, struggling to take the ball across their half forward line, and should have trailed by more than 16 points at quarter time.

NORTHERN Blues opened their 2014 Victorian Football League season with a win on Sunday, mounting a massive comeback to take down Williamstown Seagulls at Visy Park.

Having trailed by 37 points midway through the third quarter, the Blues booted 10 of the last 13 goals of the game to pinch victory by four points, 15.11 (101) to 14.13 (97).

Carlton’s No. 13 pick in last year’s AFL National Draft, Patrick Cripps, starred for the Blues, finishing the match with 34 disposals, six clearances, five tackles and a goal that sealed the game late in the last quarter. He should be in line for a senior AFL gig very soon.
