Pies star a no-show

FOOTY fans have been denied the chance to see Collingwood star Nathan Buckley make his long-awaited comeback in this Sunday's VFL clash in Bendigo.

Earlier this week, the Collingwood skipper and joint Brownlow medallist in 2003 declared he would comeback after long-term hamstring injuries at Bendigo's Queen Elizabeth Oval.

It's not another injury setback that has derailed Buckley's run, but a decision by the Metricon Bendigo Bombers board to switch the game.

The battle between Bendigo and Williamstown will now be played at the home of the Bombers' affiliate, Essendon's Windy Hill.

Bendigo Bombers general manager Peter Lodewijks said on-going concerns about the condition of the QEO led to the round 18 clash being switched.

"In our opinion, the ground is in a bad state," Lodewijks said.

There were six matches contested by All Seasons Bendigo Football-Netball League clubs on the QEO last weekend.

In the first of a big double-header Round 17 VFL weekend on 3SER 97.7FM Casey Radio, Casey Scorpions have continued their late run to the finals by defeating Port Melbourne by 39 points at TEAC Oval on Saturday.

In a stunning performance, the Scorpions could only manage 12 straight behinds in the first half, before finding their kicking boots and consigning Port Melbourne to their fifth lost in their past six games. Conversely, Casey have now five of their past six.

Despite Casey's early kicking woes, conditions at TEAC Oval were quite good for football. The sky was overcast, but no rain came, and the wind favouring the Williamstown Road end was not that strong, worth only one-to-two goals.

The crowd figure at TEAC Oval was quite poor, numbering only approximately 700-800, and with AFL Victoria chief Peter Schwab in attendance, he will be wondering how he can improve on those sort of numbers.

The toss was won by stand-in Scorpions captain Troy Makepeace, who elected to kick with the slight breeze going towards the Williamstown Road end.

Zebras trample all over Bullants

SANDRINGHAM again stamped its authority over the VFL with a commanding 62-point victory over the depleted Northern Bullants at Trevor Barker Beach Oval yesterday.

The Zebras controlled the game from the opening bounce, racing to a 32-point lead by quarter-time.

The structured and polished ladder leaders turned the match into a virtual training drill, with some inaccurate goalkicking being the only real chink in their armour.

The Bullants battled hard all day but the home side was simply too talented.

Nick Sautner booted seven goals to widen his lead at the top of the goal-kicking table.

With 52 goals for the season, the 30-year-old full-forward is almost a certainty to win his seventh "Frosty" Miller Medal — awarded to the VFL's leading goalkicker. He will become the first player in the history of the VFA/VFL to win seven goal-kicking titles.

Sandy Zebras canter in

DESPITE Lance Whitnall's encouraging return, the Northern Bullants were unable to halt rampaging Sandringham at Trevor Barker Oval yesterday.

The Zebras steamed away to win by 62 points to move two games clear on top of the ladder with three rounds remaining.

Carlton captain Whitnall, back after several weeks recovering from a knee injury, was busy and lively.

He looked fit and sharp in collecting 17 possessions and kicked 1.1 in a brief stint in attack.

He was rested before the last quarter.

Bullants coach Barry Mitchell was pleased with Whitnall's performance but unsure whether he would require another hitout in the VFL before returning to the AFL.
