Spriggs runs out Best and Fairest

David Spriggs | Picture courtesy of SpazzyPC | http://spazzypc.smugmug.com/David Spriggs completed an impressive first year at Port Melbourne, taking out the 'Darky' McPharlane medal as 2007 Best and Fairest.

Spriggs was a narrow winner polling 30 votes, in one of the closest vote counts for the Borough in recent times.  John Baird finished runner up with 28, while third place was split between Sam Plemming and Ryan 'Shooter' McMahon. on 24 apiece.


In the Reserves count, ball-magnet Sam Dwyer, already awarded the A. Todd medal for the VFL Reserves best and fairest, collected Port's award, scoring 57 votes.

Marcus Carroll (33 votes), and Matthew Pearce (29) collected the 2nd and 3rd  runner up prizes respectively.


The prestigious Norm Goss Medal was awarded to Rhys Bloomfield.

On a sadder note, Captain Chris Obst announced his retirement on the night, thanking everyone involved during his time at the club.  Chris Obst came to the club during the Swans alignment and remained on with the club when delisted by Sydney at the end of 2002.

AFL plans to take over lower levels of game

AN INTERNAL feud between the AFL and its Victorian heartland has threatened to erupt over the AFL's push to overthrow the VFL's governing body and replace it with an advisory board hand-picked by the competition's head office.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has outraged key directors on the board of AFL Victoria — the independent body that runs the game across all levels below the AFL, including the VFL, the amateurs and at community level — by recommending it be disbanded.

The historic push from the game's head office came in a written request from Demetriou in the belief that a push towards a national governing body would be better equipped to oversee the game at its second-tier level.

The move would mean the game in its traditional state of Victoria would be restructured and commanded from head office via a chief executive who reported to an advisory board in the manner of the game in developing states NSW and Queensland.

Peter Schwab, the recently appointed chief executive of AFL Victoria — previously known as Football Victoria — would run the competition under the new model.

Dogs ink new link with Williamstown

THE assurance of a full-time coach has proved the deciding factor in the Western Bulldogs' new partnership with VFL club Williamstown.

Bulldogs president David Smorgon and coach Rodney Eade yesterday announced the new three-year deal.

The agreement comes after the Bulldogs split from former affiliate Werribee.

Collingwood's departure from Williamstown opened the door for the Bulldogs to re-align with the Seagulls after a seven-year hiatus.

Brad Gotch will continue as full-time coach of the Seagulls in conjunction with his new role as development coach of the Bulldogs.

Eade said a strong alignment with a VFL club was second only to the expensive single-club model.
