Gold Coast to join VFL in 2010

A GOLD Coast development team will join the VFL in 2010, expanding the competition to 15 teams, before entering the AFL the following year as the league's 17th team.

AFL game development manager David Matthews said the team, which will enter the TAC Cup competition next year, would spend one year playing at VFL level.

As reported in The Age yesterday, the team, yet to be given a name, will play home games on the Gold Coast in 2009 as part of the under-18 TAC Cup contest.

ST KILDA and Melbourne will swap VFL affiliate sides from the 2009 season.

The move was announced by both clubs on Thursday and will see St Kilda partnered with Sandringham, and Melbourne with Casey Scorpions at the conclusion of the 2008 season.

The change is a result of extensive discussions with all parties and the result will secure a long-term future between the various clubs.

St Kilda CEO Archie Fraser said the switch would be beneficial for all parties.

Cleary mulls Coburg coup

COBURG footy legend Phil Cleary has not ruled out mounting a boardroom challenge to stop the Coburg Tigers\' proposed move to Craigieburn.

Coburg is expected to relocate to a planned $8 million football training centre in the rapidly growing outer suburb. The centre will be used as a summer training base by Coburg\'s AFL affiliation club Richmond.

Mr Cleary used his column in Inside Football magazine last week to attack Coburg for not consulting members on its future plans, and criticised Moreland Council over the "sorry tale of neglect" at Coburg City Oval.

Coburg president Lil Priest rejected the accusation, saying members had been briefed on the issue during the president\'s lunch at the past two home games.

NO SOONER had South Australia set records in flooring Victoria at Adelaide Oval yesterday than it raised its arms to claim its state league was the best outside the AFL.

The Croweaters actually started squawking after kicking a 9.2 to 0.2 second term, setting up a surprisingly easy 65-point win — their fourth in five of these games between the SANFL and VFL since 1999.

It was a record margin and record score in all 18 state league games involving the SANFL, VFL and WAFL since a forced revamp of interstate football in 1991, and SA believes it tells tomorrow\'s hopefuls where to come if they want to resurrect their chances of an AFL career.

But the contest didn\'t quite end with the final siren as a gracious Victorian coach Gerard FitzGerald — who emphasised how much SA deserved its win — said the game highlighted the differences between the leagues; between older, more mature players, and those in the VFL, where there were more kids on the horizon.
