Forecast of hard road for stand-alone clubs

AFL Victoria says it will continue to provide funding for stand-alone VFL clubs to help them remain viable, but it fears that there are ''genuine challenges'' for some still to overcome.

Coburg and Williamstown will join Port Melbourne, Bendigo and Frankston as stand-alone models from next season.

Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres has already questioned the equity of the competition. The Borough has battled to win against two of the three AFL stand-alone clubs - Geelong and Collingwood - over the past two years, and the club fears that financially it is getting tougher to remain competitive.

AFL Victoria has a working party in place with an aim to determine ''what the VFL will look like in 10 years, not in two years' time''.

All current VFL clubs have a licence which expires at the end of 2014.

EAST FREMANTLE has stormed through to the Foxtel Cup Grand Final, slogging out an emphatic 24-point victory over Werribee in torrential rain on Tuesday night at Patersons Stadium.

The Sharks will play off for a grand prize of $100,000, awarded to the winner of the knockout competition that hosts the best state-league teams across the country.

On paper, the Sharks were the underdogs, playing in unfamiliar conditions against a Werribee side made up of nine North Melbourne players.

But a ‘team first’ ethic, combined with extreme determination, effort and discipline proved too much for a Tigers outfit that lacked structure.

IN A tribute normally bestowed on champion players, the North Ballarat Roosters chaired their coach Gerard FitzGerald from the field on Saturday.

The triple premiership coach chalked up a 14-point win against Sandringham for his 300th game at the helm in the Victorian Football League.

He achieves a milestone feat only shared by legendary VFA coach and former South Melbourne star Bill Faul in the league’s 136-year history.

The Roosters playing group gathered on-field near the players’ race looking up at the coaches’ box and applauding FitzGerald as he emerged.
