IF an 87-point win could be considered routine, then Box Hills win at Bendigo on Saturday would certainly qualify.
The Hawks travelled up the M79 knowing they needed to return with a win, and a big one, to make the day worthwhile.
The Gold was 0-4 going into the weekend, with a percentage hovering near 30 per cent, while Box Hill was chasing consecutive wins for the first time this season.
Despite the odds being against the home side, it was the Gold that started the game the better.
Box Hill led by just five points at the first break despite having the advantage of a stiff breeze, which Bendigo used early in the second to take a one-goal lead.
From there, though, the Hawks clicked into gear, and goals to Amos Frank, Sam Collins, Jon Ceglar and Brandon Wood helped restore order and put the visitors 20 points up at the half.
Box Hill coach Damian Carroll wasn’t impressed with the first half display.
“We were a bit scratchy early, we certainly feel we could be a bit better than that early in the game,’’ he said. “We started to use the footy a lot better, and applied defensive pressure.
“Thankfully we improved as the game went on.’’
The Hawks lifted the tempo after half-time, and Bendigo couldn’t match them as they powered away with an eight-goal-to-one third term.
The margin was beyond 10 goals at the final break, and Box Hill went on with it in the final term, pushing the final result out to 20.15 (135) to 7.6 (48).
“I suppose we were expected to win, and have a good account of ourselves. In the end we got that,’’ Carroll said.
“From our side, there’s still plenty to work on. We’re happy to come away with a win up there at this time of year and move on pretty quickly.’’
Box Hill will have this weekend off before taking on second-placed Casey Scorpions.
