LUKE Webster is excited to be taking charge of his own team for the first time after being appointed the new coach of the Northern Blues last week.
The 30-year-old former Fremantle midfielder becomes the third coach of the Northern Blues in just four months following departed coaches Robert Hyde and Darren Harris.
A back line coach at the club over the past two seasons while juggling a role as a development coach at Carlton, Webster said he was looking forward to the challenge in 2013.
"I never really thought a few year's ago that I'd go down the coaching path," he said.
"But doing the development stuff at Carlton the last could of years and then when Darren Harris was heading back to WA for his new role, I thought now was better than ever to jump in and coach my own team."
Webster said he would spend the majority of his time focused on the Northern Blues next year while continuing his role as part of the Carlton development program in a year that would "be a big year for workload".
Working to build stronger links between the two aligned clubs will also be a focus, with VFL alignments now as important as ever in the AFL structure.
"It's great that we have a really good involvement with the Northern Blues," Webster said.
"I've only been involved with it the last two years but it's been a terrific club to work with and it's really given us at Carlton the opportunity for our players to play at a high level.
"I think it's really important this alignment that we've got and hopefully it can continue."
Webster played 33 games with the Dockers in an AFL career spanning six years which was eventually cut short in 2008 due to injury.
