Given recent discussion on this forum, time to once again keep the press on their toes.
The Age takes the prize today for the best coverage of the VFL - 10 players are referred to in their VFL story, and five of them are VFL listed. In the Herald Sun, 12 players names are mentioned, yet only three of them VFL players.
I have two major issues with the VFL coverage in the daily papers. The first is journalists writing about games they aren't actually at. Stick to covering one game properly than trying to cover two games poorly. The best player on the ground at Werribee yesterday didn't get a mention, and it was far from Majak Daw's best VFL game. He's had a lot better games. I'm sorry to offend Sam Landsberger but I'm 99% certain he wasn't at Werribee yesterday.
My second hate is the lack of equality. At Werribee yesterday, Ben McKinley and Robbie Castello both kicked five goals. The Herald Sun conveniently left out the fact Castello booted five. And to say "North's Ben McKinley kicked five goals" - well, I'm sorry but Ben McKinley was a Werribee player yesterday. St Kilda's McQualter and Tom Ledger got a mention, so too did North Melbourne's Hamish McIntosh and Richmond's Ben Griffiths. Why do these articles constantly refer to the AFL club? Yesterday, these guys represented Werribee, Sandringham and Coburg - shouldn't they be referred to as such?
