NORTH BALLARAT answered every Sandringham challenge to win by 13 points at Trevor Barker Beach Oval yesterday, joining other premiership fancies Port Melbourne and Williamstown on the winners' list.

The Roosters used the first term as a launching pad, with five goals to none on their way to a spirited 15.14 (104) to 12.19 (81) victory.

The reigning premier and ladder leader produced spurts of brilliance through Kangaroos Ed Lower (22 disposals), Corey Jones (25) and Josh Smith (22), who helped settle the group when they were seriously challenged by the Zebras.

In the second term the Zebras reduced the margin to 11 points courtesy of a Tommy Walsh goal just before the main break.

The Zebras levelled the scores early in the third term with consecutive goals to David Armitage and Walsh.
