Box Hill Hawks Welcome Mitchell

Box Hill Hawks are delighted to announce that as part of Sam Mitchell’s new role as Head of Development at Hawthorn, he will also take on the job of Box Hill Hawks Senior Coach.

Mitchell’s new role heads the development of Hawthorn’s playing list, with a specific focus on developing Hawthorn’s first to fifth year players.

The opportunity will enable Mitchell to carry his teaching from a training environment through to a match day setting, while also providing him with the opportunity to run his own program for the first time in his coaching career.

Box Hill Hawks President Ed Sill said the appointment offered incredible opportunity to both Hawthorn and Box Hill listed players.

“Sam is an excellent coach and is passionate about the development of young talent which will be a huge asset to our club,” said Sill.

“To have someone of Sam’s calibre as Senior Coach will provide both Box Hill and Hawthorn listed players with excellent development opportunity.

“We’re delighted to welcome Sam back to Box Hill, we see this as the first step into a new era at our club and we are very much looking forward to the 2021 season.”

Mitchell himself highlighted the opportunity a strongly aligned AFL and second-tier structure presents.

“The development of young talent is something I’m really passionate about so to now have that as the focus of my role at Hawthorn is personally something I am really excited to get started,” said Mitchell.

“Having the opportunity to coach my own team and be a part of every stage of players’ development is an incredible prospect.

“My role really is to get the best out of all of our young guys and the opportunity to align the two programs really closely by structuring it this way is hugely exciting and presents a fantastic opportunity for players and as an extension of that, both Box Hill and Hawthorn.”
