The Darebin Falcons have cemented their status as the preeminent team in women’s footy, winning their fourth consecutive flag in beating Melbourne Uni in the Women’s VFL Grand Final at Coburg City Oval.

Darebin controlled the game in front of a bumper 4000+ crowd, leading by 13 at half time and 32 at three quarter time.

Darcy Vescio — set to be Carlton's marquee in the national competition next year — was named best on ground for her work, including kicking the sealer, while Katie Brennan was also influential for the Falcons; her goal after the three quarter time siren drew the margin beyond five goals.

The Mugars mounted a late comeback through skipper Ellie Blackburn, but it was too late and only served to lend the scoreline an element of respectability.

The win meant completed an undefeated season for the Falcons, with the flag being Darebin’s ninth in the last 12 seasons — a record that even Hawthorn could only dream of.

The Casey Scorpions finally broke their finals run of 11 consecutive September losses with a 70-point qualifying final victory over Footscray at Casey Fields on Saturday.

The Scorpions advanced to the preliminary final, just as Collingwood did with their demolition of reigning premier Williamstown at IKON Park.

It is at this time of the year that the Scorpions tend to get the wobbles – they have been knocked out in straight sets in four seasons – and despite a shaky start, they smashed the Dogs to win their first final since 2008.

Admittedly, much of the Scorpions' achievement comes back to affiliate Melbourne's influence – in which this season the Demons have allowed the majority of their developing youngsters to play VFL finals. In contrast, their straight-sets exits in previous seasons have been influenced by the Demons sending players into end-of-season surgery in preparation for the following year.
