THE 2013 WAFL v VFL State Game will be played in Northam on May 11 as the first major football event at the Shire’s new $11 million sporting facility.
It will be the second ever State Game held at a regional venue after WA defeated Tasmania by 58 points at Kalgoorlie in 1999. The last time WA defeated Victoria was in 1991 at the WACA Ground.
WAFC Director of Pathways and Competitions Grant Dorrington said the match at Northam would be a great opportunity for the local community to see a top quality game of football in their own backyard and unite in support of their State.
“This is going to be a great contest and we encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the spectacle and hopefully support WA to a good win over Victoria,” Mr Dorrington said.
“We also want to reward the hard work and effort that the local community has put into preparing the ground for a major event and urge all WA football followers to visit Northam for the game.”
The WAFL State team will be led by Claremont coach Marc Webb, who guided the Tigers to both the WAFL and Foxtel Cup flags in his first season as a senior coach last year.
He will be the head State coach for the first time after assisting Chris Waterman last year and representing WA as a player on three occasions (2005-2007) when he was listed with Subiaco.
Webb said he was excited about the opportunity to coach WA and looking forward to leading the WAFL’s best players into action against Victoria.
“State footy is always something I’ve wanted to be part of, to test myself against the best from the other leagues around Australia. We haven’t beaten the Vics for quite a while so it’s going to be a great challenge,” Webb said.
The State Game starts at 12.15pm on Saturday, May 11 and will be telecast by ABC TV live in Victoria and delayed in WA until 2pm.
