Dandy Dollar Dash

Dandy dollar dash was a running race at half time in the VFA games,

Reminiscing with my relatives in the last coupl of days about Norman Yemm who participated in the races.

Does anyone have some good memories or a story on the races?

Cookie, this will wind up VFA and get him going

Im sure VFA will remember Doug Howie. He would often start with the other runners giving him a big start and sometimes get caught on the finish line. He used to run at the Olympic Park dogs as well.

VFA is a bit quiet on here. I'm looking forward to what he has to say about the race .

Digs,

He used to love the red box - good to see you havent changed much. When I was forward scout for Williamstown many years ago you always gave me a warm welcome.

Doug Howie had a goatee and was always on the front mark. He normally raced like Vo Rogue at a hundred miles an hour only to fall in a heap. In a couple of the Dandy Dollar dashes he just kept going and led all the way to win. Norm Yemm who played Jim Patterson in Homicide as well as in the Sullivan's was a bit of a regular in the Dandy Dollar Dash. He also played for Port in the mid/late 50s. Only played a handful of games.
Kevin Sait in later years appeared in the Statewide Sprint as it was called in later years. Might have to check a couple of finals dvds and post the results of some of the Dandy Dollar Dash as a blast from the past. John Russell was one of the callers as was Eddie Bush.

He had a cult following. The crowd roared Normie, Normie, Normie !!
Interestingly the voice over man with the words the Dandy Dollar Dash does a bit of voice over stuff on the Local Footy Show on C31.
Mark Hipworth ex Camberwell was a good runner. Gary Parkes ex Essendon and Werribee appear in a few of the Dandy Dollar races as well.
Alan Dizzy Lynch might have appeared in a couple of these races in later years over the long distance.

It's a great concept! If only the abc could jump in with the vfl & do it each week. They have the perfect caller for it. Stawell gift commentator Peter donnegan.

I sent you a pm George
