Initially I was dead against this concept, for a team to fight its way to 7th on the ladder and have to face two weeks of Elimination Finals seems pretty rough.
However, I can see the value in keeping slim hopes for sides outside the eight to try and scrape their way into tenth position.. Giving a lot of battling clubs a glimmer of hope.
I think the better option is for the AFL to invest into the NSW and QLD state leagues and having those interstate clubs rejoin their respective comp.
Given that Tasmania must only be a couple of years away, we realistically are looking at a 22 team competition.
* It's time to restore the VFA name.
If theirs 22 teams in a couple of years does it not make sense to have a division 1 and 2 with promotion and relegation? This will also ensure that the competition is more equitable, 11 teams play each other twice for a 20 round season with bottom two relegated and 3rd last to play 3rd in division 2 in a elimination promotion play off. Would certainly keep interest alive for those struggling in division one and ensure they keep on fighting !
