The first meeting between a current SANFL & VFA Club was in 1886
1/7/1886 Williamstown 4.6 d South Adelaide 1.7 at williamstown
Of course the SANFL is a couple of weeks older than the VFA making it the oldest football organisation in Australia.
They played each other for the first time in 1879 for the first ever inter Colonial/State match which the VFA won.
The VFA played the SANFL in 1977 for the Centenery of both competitions with the SANFL running out narrow winners after a great hardfought game.
Back in 77 the SANFL & VFA would have been best mates. the VFL had just walked out of the NFL comp to set up the Australian Football Championship (as usual WA and Tas did what they were told).
I regard 77 as the year it all started to go wrong (or progress depending on who you are) in footy
West Torrens formed 1895 (merged woodville 1991)
Port Melbourne formed 1874
Technically the SAFA is older than the VFA, but the concept of the VFA is older. The was born out of the need of a controlling body especially after the disputed game between Melbourne & Carlton in 1876.
The SAFA was formed because there were three codes in Adelaide and clubs had no idea who was playing what.... it seems we went for Victorian Rules because we wanted interstate games... prior to this Kensingtion rules (based on rugby) where quite popular
Fascinating! Do you have a few examples of those rules?
will them up
