Looks like the ABC have made up their minds and wont telecst the VFL in future.

THE ABC will steer clear of broadcasting reality television and live sport, instead focusing on drama and news, the ABC managing director Mark Scott said today.
In an address to the National Press Club in Canberra, Mr Scott said reality and live sport were best left to commercial TV broadcasters who were pursuing a mass audience.
“Neither of these will be spaces for the ABC,†he said. “For the ABC, the delivery of an outstanding quality news and current affairs service on free-to-air television is a key to our enduring offering.â€
“In addition to news and children’s [shows], in the decade ahead I see a commitment to quality Australian content, including drama, and programming of a specialist nature as particular places where the ABC needs to deliver.
Mr Scott mounted a strong defence of outsourcing ABC internal production and elaborated how the corporation set up ABC News 24 without direct government funding.
“At the ABC, we want to reflect the nation to the nation,†Mr Scott said. “But it does not automatically follow that in order to do this, the ABC has to be the creator of that television everywhere. Increasingly, we have found that working with the independent sector allows us to make a range of programs, using outstanding local talent, in a way that helps show the richness of the Australian story.â€
Of ABC News 24, Mr Scott said he found efficiencies by reducing the number of people it took to put programs to air; and introducing studio automation, desk-top edit and file-based technology.
“ABC News 24 has been a great success for the ABC—and money has not been taken from elsewhere in the organisation to fund it,†he said.
“We saved the money—making efficiencies and we invested it in something new.â€
Mr Scott said some of the broadcaster’s most enduring content did not have big audiences - Radio National and Classic FM, Compass, First Tuesday Book Club and Lateline – but they were engaging and they fulfiled the ABC Charter.
well Ch ten would need to lift their game if they thought of telecasting it their work on Saturday Night was atrocious- missed the first bounce and threw three ad breaks in without waiting for goals to be scored..
Somehow I can't see Channel 10 picking up any of the state leagues as they seem to have given up on broadcasting the AFL.
If the ABC pull the plug the only hope of the VFL being on TV in the future is Foxsports. However, I can't see that happening.

Speaking to someone tonight at AFL Vic, I reminded them that SBS showed some 'interest' in doing state league footy the last time the ABC threaten to pull the pin (a few years back)

Let SBS do it with our own Brekky DJ share the commentating with the legendary Les Murray. Special comments from Frank Lessiputy. Pete, I thought Frank Lesiputty was very good with the special comments in the game between Box Hill v Willy. Is it true that the ABC is not doing the SANFL games next year ? Could be that the ABC won't do any State League Games which would be a crying shame. Maybe time to bring back Phil Gibbs, Ted Henrys, Don Hyde, Clem Dimsey and the Dandy Dollar Dash with guest appearance from Norm Yemm.
Interesting few minutes on SEN last night with the boys suggesting that, given the way in which VFL clubs, particularly Box Hill and Sandy, have been treated by their aligned AFL clubs, the time was ripe for clubs to finish alignments and reform as the VFA.
Suggestion was to include more country teams and strong local teams, funded largely by the state government. Don't know about that. Has Ted ever been seen at a VFA/VFL game?
Phil Cleary was interviewed. He thought the best outcome would be for a few more current teams to bite the bullet and stand alone.
Now to the topic!
Phil was asked if it was the end of TV coverage.
Phil said he thought not. Couldn't see why they would, as ratings were good.
Lum,
Ted wouldn't know his arse from his elbow, They don't go to the footy from Toorak.
Stand alone would be the way to go if the VFL would give some clear direction on what they are looking for in this second tier competition instead of just bumbling along year after year in the shambles that it is at the moment.
Well said Digs.
Let's hope Phil is right. I heard Scott interviewed a few weeks ago and he said they wouldnt cut Saturday afternoon sport, effectively because their was a strong and loyal audience. Things can change though.
I read in Inside Football that all state wide sport coverage would be cut, this was talking about SANFL but it said other states would follow suit.
Lawn bowls has been given the chop by the ABC, maybe the thin edge of the wedge for all sports coverage ???

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come for state league football Australia wide.
