Are the umpires told to be sympathetic to a player who has been called as playing on after taking a mark, and is then tackled from behind, as he perhaps hasn't heard the call, or if the mark isn't paid due to it being touched ?

I am unclear on this, because I think it is a matter of different leagues' umpires being told to enforce it a different way. Having not attended a Field Umpire's training, I cannot tell you what the situation is on this. As I said, I think each league differs, and each umpire differs in the way they enforce the law.
