BOX HILL made amends for recent losses when it recorded its third win of the year in trying conditions at Preston yesterday, defeating the Northern Bullants by 36 points, 13.14 (92) to 7.14 (56)

Kicking with the aid of a strong end-to-end wind, Box Hill was quick out of the blocks and took a 37-point lead at the quarter-time break. The Bullants found it exceptionally hard kicking against the wind, but made good use of the gale in the second quarter.

Thanks to some brilliant ruck work from Sam Jacobs, the Bullants managed to keep the ball in their forward 50 for the majority of the quarter, but were wasteful with their shots on goal. Steven Browne and Darren Pfeiffer were excellent around the stoppages while Jarrod Bannister and David Teague were also useful contributors. The Hawks managed one goal and two behinds against the wind, almost mirroring their opponent's first-quarter effort, but still held an eight-point lead at half-time.

PORT Melbourne coach Gary Ayres says Ben Cousins will not play in the VFL this season.

The 2005 Brownlow medallist registered with second-placed Borough before the June 30 deadline and must play one game to qualify for the finals.

But Ayres, who expects Cousins to start training with the club in August, said it was unlikely the four-time West Coast best-and-fairest winner would play for Port this season.

"I spoke to him the Monday after the registration went through," Ayres said.

ABC Grandstand VFL travels to Cramer St this Saturday for the big Round 15 clash between the Bullants and Box Hill, with all the action on ABC1 from 1pm.

It�s a split round, so both teams will be looking to go into the break on a high; the Bullants to try and cement a place in the top eight and the Hawks to regain some pride after a difficult season.

The boys from Box Hill are currently languishing in last spot on the ladder, having won just two games for the year. But there is no doubt they will be fired up for this clash, with both coach Barry Mitchell and big forward Digby Morrell coming up against their old club.

McHugh earns recall for Cats encounter

ROHAN McHUGH has earned a recall for North Ballarat's encounter with Geelong in the Victorian Football League in Geelong tomorrow.

McHugh has not played since North Ballarat's heavy loss to the Northern Bullants on May 18.

Having made his senior debut in the opening round, he played the opening seven matches before being dropped in the fall-out from the Bullants calamity.

McHugh is one of three compulsory changes for the Selkirk Roosters, which meet the Cats in the curtain-raiser AFL match of the day between Geelong and Western Bulldogs.

IT'S taken six years and a few painful hurdles, but Geelong VFL midfielder Jay Cheep will play his 50th VFL match tomorrow morning against North Ballarat at Skilled Stadium.

Cheep turned recruiters' heads in 2002 after a season that earned him TAC Cup team of the year selection and third place in the Calder Cannons best and fairest.

After missing out in that year's national draft, Essendon invited him to train for a place on its rookie list, before he succumbed to the dreaded osteitis pubis and missed the cut.

A year later, despite missing the entire 2003 season, Richmond came knocking, but ultimately decided against Cheep after he suffered shin splints.

Veteran Demon Adem Yze in no hurry to hang up boots

ADEM Yze has declared he will play on next year. He is happy to play at a lower level if not given another senior chance.

Yze, languishing at VFL club Sandringham as Melbourne turns to youth, is in the final year of a contract at the Demons.

Yze will almost certainly have to go elsewhere to build on his 14-year AFL career.

Despite playing only four games this year, Yze is confident he could play a role with a club in flag contention looking to top-up with experience.

VFL stalwart James Podsiadly celebrated his 100th game in style yesterday, almost single-handedly lifting Werribee to the most unlikely of victories over Frankston at Chirnside Park.

Podsiadly took an amazing 15 marks, gathered 18 possessions and kicked five goals as the Tigers overcame a six-goal deficit to win by five points and continue their climb up the VFL ladder.

Although in control early, Werribee went missing in the second term as the Dolphins slammed on six unanswered goals while holding the home side to just four behinds. The torrent of goals forced Werribee coach Simon Atkins to send Podsiadly into defence to try to curb the flow.
