Dolphins battle to stay afloat

From the Herald-Sun
Reported by Chris Mitchell

FRANKSTON president John Barry is confident the club will be in the VFL next season but cannot guarantee its future beyond that.
The financially stricken Dolphins are in a mess on and off-field and are open to alignment talks with an AFL club.

Frankston, one of just two stand-alone clubs with Port Melbourne, receives $140,000 annually from AFL Victoria but is not guaranteed the same amount next season.

Frankston joined the VFA/VFL in 1966 from the Mornington Peninsula Football League.

"We are dependent on that (funding). We are also dependent on sponsors and gate-takings. We have lost a few sponsors because of the economic downturn," Barry said.

It would certainly be a strange outcome if (say) Essendon was to become aligned with Frankston at the same time that the Saints are trying to develop a base at Seaford.

I was wondering in recent weeks, given that no progress seems to have occured at Belvedere Park, whether the Saints are sitting back hoping that Frankston would go under and they would just slide on into the void at Frankston Park.

They skinned Moorabbin after they won the VFA flag in 1963. Took over Moorabbin ground in 1965.
Frankston will be around next year and hopefully beyond. A very competitive Frankston with hopefully a few wins for 2009 second half of the season.
If they show the same endeavour and commitment as yesterday they will start to win a few games for sure.
