Karmichael Hunt needs to develop AFL skills

From the Courier Mail
Reported by Andrew Hamilton

KARMICHAEL Hunt had one head coach at Broadbeach Oval last Saturday, three assistant coaches and between 4000 and 5000 enthusiastic self-appointed advisers lobbing their two bob's worth over the fence.

Right now their collective insights won't help his development as much as the opponent he plays on each week. Or his own ability to learn on the job.

Which is why he simply must play more footy.

The shortcomings in Hunt's game cannot be developed on the training track.

If Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna was to go ahead with his original plan of pulling him out of the VFL after this weekend, there would be no way he could play round 1 in the AFL next year.

GEELONG'S 2009 crop of draftees have shown some promising signs, despite the Cats' VFL loss to Sandringham yesterday.

GEELONG West-St Peters power forward Nathan Saunders fears the hamstring injury he sustained in Saturday's loss to Newtown & Chilwell may have ended his decorated career.

The 33-year-old former AFL and VFL player will go for MRI scans in Melbourne today to learn the full extent of an injury he described as his most painful on a footy field.

VFL Stabs: Casey denies drainage problems

THE City of Casey denies there is a drainage problems at Casey Fields.

The Scorpions’ ground was in a deplorable condition against Sandringham in Round 9, with mud patches and pools of water near the centre. But City of Casey parks and reserves manager Trevor Griffin said there was no issue with drainage.

“Since April this year the ground has had nearly 300 millimetres of rainfall, which has been one of the wettest periods since the ground was built,” Griffin said. “Much of the rainfall has taken place during the time when games are taking place, which tends to increase impact on the ground.

Council implements a regular program of slicing and aerating the surface, which assists the underground drainage network in removing water from the ground. This program has been increased during the wet months to maintain the ground’s surface.”

Bullants in nailbiter

JARROD McCorkell ensured skipper Adam Iacobucci’s 100th VFL game was one to remember, as his late behind helped the Northern Bullants edge out Port Melbourne by one point on Sunday.

The two sides are quickly making a tradition of tight encounters, with the Bullants’ win handing it redemption from Round 5’s five-point loss to the Borough.

Coach David Teague’s Bullants held the advantage most of the day, only to see the Borough edge ahead by three points come the final change.

In a nail-biting last quarter in which the lead changed hands several times, Port booted a behind to tie the scores with just seconds remaining on the clock.

The Bullants doggedly worked the ball down the other end, with midfielder McCorkell’s point from a kick on the boundary enough to clinch a win for his side.

THE VFL could be without the Gold Coast next season with the team looking likely to join the Brisbane Lions in the Queensland league for a proposed northern conference.

AFL game development manager David Matthews said several VFL clubs had expressed strong concerns about having an eastern seaboard competition involving the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney.

"I think you'll find that Gold Coast will seek entry locally in a Queensland competition in an expanded northern conference," Matthews said. "I think the VFL clubs themselves have expressed a view that the eastern seaboard model is not the preferred option. I think they prefer to play amongst themselves."

TIPSTERS, scrap your VFL form guide.

Still bitter from last week's fade-out to North Ballarat, Williamstown took previously high-flying Casey to task at Burbank Oval on Saturday, bouncing the Scorpions by 124 points.

The Seagulls' grand sense of occasion meant some happy viewing for the onlooking 1990 premiership reunion, also ensuring skipper Brett Johnson will remember his 150th VFL game fondly.

Casey's thumping loss handed coach Brad Gotch an unhappy return to Burbank Oval, with his seven-year tenure at the Seagulls ending during the off-season.

Williamstown coach Peter German, with who Gotch swapped places, was left far more satisfied.

THE Bendigo Bank Bombers yesterday lost their fourth-consecutive game of the VFL season, but not before giving reigning premier North Ballarat an almighty scare.
In a game switched to Essendon’s Windy Hill because of surface concerns with the Queen Elizabeth Oval, the Roosters prevailed by six points in a thriller, 15.14 (104) to 15.8 (98).

Yesterday’s defeat leaves the Bombers – who had at one stage been 5-1 – with a 5-5 record and in seventh position heading into their mid-season break.

The Bombers had led by seven points during the last quarter, but the Roosters showed their class to answer Bendigo’s challenge and beat their country rivals for the 11th time in 12 meetings.

“It was a heartbreaking loss, but it’s probably the best we’ve played all year,’’ Bombers coach Shannon Grant said.
