FORMER Melbourne-listed midfielder Shane Valenti's hopes of resurrecting his AFL career have been boosted after he and North Ballarat on-baller Stephen Clifton were named joint winners of the J. J. Liston Trophy in the VFL at Etihad Stadium last night.

Clifton and Valenti were locked on 20 votes for the VFL's highest individual honour at the end of a dramatic count - in which both fended off Box Hill Hawk Ed Curnow, who led the count until his season-ending leg injury in round 13.

Curnow, a former Adelaide rookie, finished third on 13 votes, ahead of Gold Coast teenager David Swallow (12).

Calls to re-jig VFL's Liston Trophy

WILLIAMSTOWN coach Peter German and Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres have called for an overhaul of Liston Trophy voting.

German believes the 3-2-1 voting system could cost one of his star Seagulls the award tonight award, while Ayres said the emergency umpire was better equipped to cast the votes.

The VFL uses the same voting system for its top individual award as used for the Brownlow Medal, with the three field umpires awarding votes to the best three players.

"(The emergency umpire) doesn't have to immerse himself in the goings on of the game," Ayres said.

"You could give the responsibility to him and he can sit back, watch the game unfold and have a better view from the sidelines."

German said a 5-4-3-2-1 format would give a fairer reflection of the best player.

Roosters have a Box Hill to climb

BOX Hill Hawks stand between North Ballarat and a third consecutive Victorian Football League grand final appearance.

The Selkirk Roosters face Box Hill in a preliminary final on Sunday, with the winner to earn a tilt at a premiership.

The knockout clash is scheduled to be played at Port Melbourne, but there is a strong possibility the two preliminary finals will be transferred because of the heavy condition of North Port Oval.

AFL Victoria announced last night it was monitoring the ground situation, and the venue would be confirmed today.

The ground has been used on the first four days of the final series over two weeks and has deteriorated substantially.

North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald said there was no question the heavy nature of the ground would have taken a toll on the Box Hill Hawks.

FitzGerald and his coaching panel watched the Hawks upset Port Melbourne, 14.11 (95) to 12.17 (89).

Box Hill clinches a classic over gallant Port Melbourne

WHEN Port Melbourne defeated the Box Hill Hawks by three points in the VFL semi-finals last year, the match was quickly hailed a classic. People talked about it for weeks.
Hard to believe, but the same clubs today fought out a semi of the same gold standard.

It was never less than engrossing right up until the final siren, which sounded with the ball on the Port half forward line.

Moments earlier little Hawk Jayden Hoegel had produced a right-foot snap from a pack of players to send his team six points in front. It had looked like there would have to be extra time to separate the sides.

The Port players left the ground carrying the retired Corey McGrath on their shoulders and with their hearts in the boots.

Careful Hawks

BOX HILL HAWKS: Hawthorn has pulled ruckman Simon Taylor out of tomorrow's cutthroat semi-final against Port Melbourne for ''precautionary reasons''.

Taylor has battled to return to full fitness since fracturing his leg in a pre-season match in which he returned prematurely against Sydney last month.

''You don't want anything happening to your big men this time of year so we just didn't want to take any risks,'' Hawks development coach Brendon Bolton said.

Rookie ruckman Luke Lowden is Taylor's replacement.
